Sinus problems can affect more than just sinuses, says Dr. Brian Lee of Scottsdale Sinus & Allergy Center; chronic sinusitis can actually lower your quality of life.
“Our philosophy here is to really take a comprehensive approach to make sure that patients are correctly diagnosed in all facets of the disease process that are affecting their quality of life,” Lee said. “So we want to make sure that we address and diagnose structural issues, infectious or inflammatory issues, as well as the allergy component of it, because all of those issues contribute to their disease process and the issues that they're having with their nose and their sinuses.”
Some patients have suffered from sinus problems so long, they have forgotten what if feels like to be able to breathe normally, Lee said.
“And once we get them all taken care of and get everything opened up, kind of that ‘aha’ moment that they get when they take a breath through their nose,” he said. “And they're like, ‘Oh my gosh, I've never been able to breathe like that.' It never gets old to see that look on their face when they actually take a full breath in through their nose.”
In 2015 and 2016, Lee was voted one of the Valley's "Top Doctors" by Phoenix Magazine, according to the Scottsdale Sinus & Allergy Center website.
One of the procedures the clinic uses is called balloon sinuplasty, which can be performed in the clinic without the patient having to go to an outpatient surgery center. A tiny balloon is inserted with a catheter into the sinus cavity, and then once the blockage is located, it's slowly inflated to open the sinus airways.
The bacterial infection is cleared out and drained, allowing the patient to breathe deeply. As breathing patterns return to normal, patients often find they can sleep better after having the procedure and have more energy each day.
